Sergej Melikov The New Leader Of Dagestan

Sergej Melikov: The New Leader of Dagestan

Background and Rise to Power

Sergej Melikov, a career military officer, was appointed as the new Head of the Republic of Dagestan by Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 5, 2021.

Melikov's appointment comes after the resignation of Vladimir Vasilyev, who had led Dagestan since 2013. Melikov, 52, is the eighth Head of Dagestan since the republic became part of the Russian Federation in 1991.

Challenges Facing Melikov

Melikov faces numerous challenges as the new leader of Dagestan. The republic has been plagued by instability, corruption, and violence for years.

Dagestan is also home to a complex ethnic and religious landscape, with over 30 ethnic groups and a mix of Sunni and Shia Muslims.

Melikov will need to address these challenges while also working to improve the republic's economy and infrastructure.

Melikov's Plans for Dagestan

In his inaugural address, Melikov outlined his plans for Dagestan. He pledged to crack down on corruption, improve security, and develop the economy.

Melikov also said that he would focus on improving relations between the republic's different ethnic groups.

It remains to be seen whether Melikov will be able to overcome the challenges facing Dagestan. However, his appointment is a sign that the Russian government is committed to stabilizing the republic.
